Lauren Belding-Brainard
MA, AMFT
Associate Marriage and Family Therapist
As a Marriage and Family Therapist, Lauren is passionate about working with individuals, couples, and families who need help navigating life’s challenges with greater understanding, connection, and resilience. She specializes in guiding clients through conflict resolution, communication struggles, and emotional healing.
Using a family systems perspective, she works with families by addressing the interconnected dynamics that influence individual behaviors and relationships within the family unit. Relationships are an integral part of being a human and having a family, this is why her ideology about therapy is rooted in the idea that families function as systems, where each member’s actions affect the others. She aims to strengthen familial relationships by addressing systemic issues like intergenerational trauma, enmeshment, or rigid roles, guiding members toward greater understanding and cohesion. This approach focuses on identifying patterns, roles, hierarchies, and communication styles that contribute to challenges. By examining these dynamics, she is confident that by helping families understand how issues such as conflict, emotional distance, or stress are perpetuated and how members of the family can work collaboratively together to create healthier interactions.
Working With Lauren
When working with adolescents and children Lauren uses interactive methods and play therapy while involving and collaborating with other members of the system including caregivers, teachers, other therapists, and primary care physicians resulting in a collaborative holistic approach. This is key when working with children and teens, they may have multiple adults and key players in their life that have influence on them. Some goals may include helping parents and children improve communication, establish supportive boundaries, and develop problem-solving strategies.
Lauren is passionate about working with couples because she knows that change is possible. By focusing on identifying and addressing relational patterns that create conflict, such as unresolved power dynamics or unmet emotional needs, fostering empathy and healthier communication skills are realistic goals that can be met. Her approach is compassionate, client-centered, and solution-focused, integrating evidence-based techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT), Family Systems Therapy, and Structural Therapy. She believes that every relationship has the potential for growth and healing, and she is committed to creating a safe, supportive space where clients can explore their emotions and strengthen their bonds.
She holds an associate’s degree in emergency medicine from Southern Crescent Technical College working as an AEMT as a young adult. From there she earned a bachelor’s degree in human services/counseling psychology from Gordon State College. After graduation she worked as a behavioral therapist with children who were diagnosed with Autism, Downs Syndrome, and other cognitive and physical disabilities. Furthering her education, she attended and completed her master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Mercer University’s School of Medicine, where she obtained four years of experience and thousands of hours of practicing therapy. Ultimately, her passion as a family systems therapist lies within the ability and honor to be a part of an individual’s empowerment journey, walking with them through the process. She strives to help her clients view their challenges through the lens of connection, fostering resilience, and emotional growth across their relationships, which motivates her heart every day in the therapy room. Whether you’re facing relationship difficulties, parenting challenges, or personal struggles, Laure is here to help you find clarity, connection, and lasting change.
